Canada Games Photograph Collection Digitization Initiative:
Developing a digitization strategy

The first stage of our project is the development of a digitization strategy. Since we cannot digitize the entire photograph collection, it is up to us to decide how best to approach the initiative. The Canada Games Council will be sharing their ‘wish list’ with us once the collection has arrived at Brock. In the meantime, we will develop our own set of priorities, focusing on how the mandate of the SOHA and thinking about topics that could be of interest to researchers now and in the future.

Here are some questions to help guide you as you read about and reflect on digitization best practices, sport and visual culture, and the use of photographs in oral history. You can use this document as a worksheet to jot down your thoughts and ideas which you’ll share with the rest of the team at our meeting on Monday, October 4.

1. Digitization: Based on your readings, what do we need to do first as we embark on our project? What is the purpose of our digitization project?

2. Sport and photography: What are the most important ‘take-aways’ from the readings that you did on sport and photography? What should we be aware of as we begin selecting photographs? Are there any particular themes that we should focus on?

3. Oral history and photography: In what ways would digital photographs enhance the SOHA’s oral history collections? How should these images be presented on the SOHA website?

4. SOHA’s Canada Games oral history collection: List the interviews that you reviewed and next to each one provide suggestions that would best support/enhance the content of the interview.

Once you have done this, make a list of past Games, events, and broader themes associated with the Games that may not have been addressed through the oral history interviews but could be explored through photography. List these in order of priority. Why are these of greatest importance?

5. Your research project: Is there a topic (or topics) that you are most interested in researching for your independent research project? What sort of images do you hope to find?
