3x Research Assistant Internship positions, Asia Pacific Foundation

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is a not-for-profit think tank dedicated to researching and analyzing Canada-Asia relations, building actionable insights and policy recommendations for deeper engagement. We focus on a wide range of activities, such as tracking trade and investment flows, public opinion, digital technologies and transformation, sub-national engagement strategies, sustainable development policies, and build Asia competency among Canadians.

About the projects – APF Canada has numerous ongoing research initiatives, including some that are in the very early stages and require compiling, organizing, and analyzing information about new project areas. Specifically, we are seeking summer research assistants to work on one of the following projects:

  1. Compile information from Japanese open-source materials on trends related to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues in Japan, including at the sub-national level; create media and resource lists for Northeast Asia, with a focus on Japan. Advanced Japanese-language capability and a background in social sciences required.
  2. Compile information related to international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and civil society networks in the Asia Pacific. Background in political science or related field a plus.
  3. Compile information about the sub-national level in India, including collecting data through open-source materials about India’s sub-national social and political environments, as well as policies and laws impacting international engagement across different states. Collect information about public opinion in India about various international issues of interest. Build a list of media outlets in South Asia. Basic background on India a plus, although a broader interest in South Asia will also be considered. Proficiency in an Indian language will be a plus.

Overall, the applicants should have strong research and writing skills, a penchant for investigating issues, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Must be authorized to work in Canada and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Must have student status, i.e., be enrolled in a Masters or PhD program (students on leave or postdoctoral fellows are not eligible)
  • Must be based in Vancouver and available to work at our downtown office approximately 1-2 days per week.

Additional details:

  • This will be a hybrid position with a mix of in-office and work-from-home (WFH).
  • Research Assistants should be able to provide their own laptop and internet connection for work-from-home days.
  • The salary will be between $25/hr and $30/hr, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • We are looking for up to 3 students who are available to work 2 to 3 days per week (15 to 21hrs/week) over 16-17 weeks
  • Preferred start date: June 2022
